Looking at today Gospel (Matthew 24:9-14)

March 7, 2012

In Matthew’s Gospel today, Jesus tells his disciples the hard truth. “Speaking to his disciples, Jesus said, ‘They will hand you over to be tortured and will put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of my name. Then many will fall away, and they will betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because of the increase of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And this good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world, as a testimony to all the nations; and then the end will come.'”

We, like the disciples, want to be liked. However sometimes, we have to hold true to the convictions we say we have. To truly be a disciple of Christ Jesus, we must remain faithful to the ministry Jesus was performing here. Showing glimpses of where God abides, is difficult.

In our lives where does God abide?

Hopefully it is every moment of everyday. Not just when we are at our places of worship. If it is only in the place we worship, are we sure that God is there or is it wishful thinking on our part?

Let us go forth looking for God everywhere, and in everything. Trials may await us at every turn but we hang on to the promise of the Grace of God and the hope of standing in his Glory. But there is a word of warning that we should be careful who we follow so that others may not be lead astray.

We should never allow the scriptures to be used to alienate people in society or put anyone below the status of being a child of God. For me, this passage is telling us to do just that. We will be persecuted for standing up for the people on the fringes but that is what we are called to do.
